Michael Mawhinney works in the National Health Service in the UK as a cancer nurse and is in the final year of his PhD at Oxford Brookes University. His study aims to optimise the care of patients receiving oral chemotherapy. Since qualifying as a nurse from Queen’s University Belfast in 2009, Michael has worked in oncology, haematology, intensive care, early phase clinical trials and recently finished a role with NHS England as a Quality Improvement Lead. Michael is a keen advocate of research about cancer nursing and its role in improving the care of people with cancer. An ambassador for the UK Oncology Nursing Society, Michael has also recently been awarded a Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship to investigate safe care practices in oral chemotherapy provisions in America and Canada.
